When you sell, a handmade rug in good condition is generally worth £200 to £15,000 or more, while a machine-made rug of the same size is worth £30 to £300. But the figure that matters to a seller is not the shop price — it is the offer you receive, which is normally 50–75% of a rug's realistic resale value. It helps to understand that every rug has three different prices at once. There is the retail replacement price a gallery would charge a customer; the resale or market value that pieces change hands for between dealers and collectors; and the offer you personally receive when you sell. These are three very different numbers. A rug tagged at £4,000 in a shop might have a resale value of £2,000 and a fair private offer of £1,200 — and none of those figures is dishonest, because each reflects a different point in the rug's life. The Three Prices Every Rug Has
Why a single rug can be quoted at three very different figures.
A rug's retail price, its resale value and the offer you receive are three separate numbers. Retail is what a shop charges after mark-up; resale is the wholesale value between buyers; and your offer is a share of resale value, because the buyer must resell the rug, cover costs and carry the risk. Understanding the gap between them stops sellers feeling short-changed by a perfectly fair offer.

The percentages are guides, not rules. For a rare, in-demand antique the offer can approach full resale value because the buyer is confident of selling it on quickly. For a common decorative rug the margin is wider, because the buyer takes more risk and holds it longer. How the Way You Sell Changes What You Take Home
The same rug can net very different amounts depending on the channel.
The price you are quoted is not the money you keep. Auction houses deduct seller's commission and fees of roughly 15–25% and cannot guarantee a sale; online marketplaces cost you time, listing fees and the risk of no-shows; a house clearance pays a fraction of value for convenience. A direct specialist buyer makes a firm, fee-free offer you can accept the same day — which is why, for most rugs, it nets the most.

A rug that "sells for £2,000" at auction might return around £1,500–£1,700 after commission and fees, and only if it sells at all. How Size Affects the Price You Are Offered
Size changes price, but not in a straight line. Room-size rugs of about 2 x 3 metres are the most saleable and hold their value best, because they suit the most homes. Small mats contain little material and fetch modest sums, while very large or oversized carpets are worth less per square metre than their size suggests, because far fewer buyers have the floor space to take them.
This is why two rugs of identical quality can attract quite different offers purely on their dimensions. A finely knotted 2 x 3 m Tabriz sits in the sweet spot of demand; the same weaver's 4 x 6 m palace carpet, though it holds far more work, appeals to a smaller pool of buyers and so the price per square metre falls. Runners and hallway lengths are a special case — a good antique runner in the right proportions can be very saleable. When you send measurements with your photos, include length and width in both feet and metres so the offer reflects the true size.
How Condition Moves the Offer Up or Down
Condition is one of the largest single factors in the final price, and can raise or lower an offer by half or more. Even, honest wear and a clean, sound structure keep most of a rug's value, whereas moth damage, holes, dry-rotted foundations, water stains and heavy-handed repairs cut it sharply. The rarer and older the rug, the more forgiving the market is of wear — but for ordinary pieces, condition is decisive.
Buyers price on what it will cost to bring a rug back to a saleable state. Professional reweaving, reselvedging and specialist washing are expensive, so visible damage is deducted at more than its repair cost to account for risk. The most overlooked is identification — a rug sold merely as an "oriental rug" almost always fetches less than the same piece correctly named.
